Take a minute off that busy schedule..Professionals need to keep fit and healthy.

Time is one of the scarcest resource for professionals, Accountants not spared. Professionals, are very busy individuals that they dedicate most of their time to study, work and making money, with hardly any minute left to think about their lives. This scenario is inevitable, given the deadlines, targets and timeliness to satisfy client and individual needs.

People need both physical and mental fitness because these play very important roles in their lives and these two can reduce the susceptibility of individuals to medical conditions like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease and can improve one’s general health and mood. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve one’s quality of life. A minimum of 30 minutes a day can allow a person to enjoy a good and healthy life.

  • Physical activity could take the category of endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. However, these are intertwined e.g. endurance activities also build strength and strength exercises can also help improve balance. People need to incorporate these physical activities in their routines.
  •  Endurance exercises include aerobics activities like jogging, swimming, farming, dancing etc. Aerobic exercise speeds up one’s heart rate and breathing and gives the heart and lungs a workout and increases endurance.
  •  Strengths exercises on the other hand makes one’s muscles stronger and may help a person to stay independent and carry out everyday activities, such as climbing stairs (when lifts are not working!!) and carrying your stuff around. These exercises also include lifting weights and squatting.
  • Balance exercises are important to prevent falls (particularly in older people) and one can practice this by standing on one foot and holding the other. Improving balance makes one feel steadier on feet.
  • Lastly, flexibility workouts gives a person more freedom of movement in everyday activities and these may include stretching shoulders, upper arms and lower limbs as well as yoga.

A determined professional cannot fail to select from the above or all from of workouts to improve life.

Cost: One aspect that people look at is the cost of fitness. However, depending on your calculation, one can opt to go a gym for a workout, at least thrice a week and this will keep your life in check. Also, as mentioned above, there are other ‘no cost’ forms of exercise that one can apply to still keep fit (jogging, brisk walks, skipping a rope, playing football with your friends or kids).

Time: Time will never be ample, professionals just have to ‘create it’. People have reasons for not exercising, but one solution is time management. If we do not create time now, we will it at some time for doctor’s appointments and taking medications. Time will come at a cost then.

There is need to plan workouts as part of our routine, however short (20 minutes). Let’s limit time on ‘screens’ and use some of this to work out. Involve family where feasible for more fun; and ‘Walk home’ and vice versa when you can.
