From Classroom Theory To Professional Practice: My Internship Experience.

From Classroom Theory to Professional Practice: My Internship Experience.

People often say, “Balance these books,” but my internship experience has taught me that accounting and auditing are about much more than balancing figures. As an accounting student, I have always understood auditing from a theoretical perspective. However, being exposed to its practical application has helped me appreciate the value and beauty of the profession in a completely different way.

While in school, accounting questions often present a company with numerous adjustments and require financial statements to be prepared within a limited period. Every entry matters and every correct treatment contributes to the final answer. In professional practice, however, I have learned that the numbers tell a story, and auditing is about examining that story critically. It involves understanding the business, examining evidence, asking questions, identifying inconsistencies and exercising professional judgment before reaching a conclusion.

Throughout my internship period, I have come to appreciate that an auditor does not simply check whether figures add up. An auditor seeks to understand whether the information is faithfully represented. This requires curiosity, attention to detail and a willingness to look beyond what is immediately presented. Seeing how the concepts I learned in class are applied to real businesses has made auditing much more meaningful to me.

Beyond the technical experience, I have greatly appreciated the firm’s learning environment. Interns are given opportunities to learn, ask questions and interact with experienced professionals. We are treated as part of the family, which has made the experience both comfortable and enriching. The firm’s generosity through internship allowances has also demonstrated its commitment to supporting young professionals.

Another distinctive part of my experience has been the firm’s God-fearing culture. Beginning each Monday with praise, worship and preaching provides an opportunity to reflect, express gratitude and start the week with purpose. I have also been inspired by the firm’s professionalism and commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles. This has shown me that professional excellence should go hand in hand with responsible business practices.

Ultimately, I have discovered that the beauty of accounting and audit lies not merely in checking numbers, but in understanding businesses, seeking truth through evidence, exercising sound judgment and providing assurance that contributes to better decision-making. It has been an experience that has connected my classroom knowledge to the professional world and given me a deeper appreciation of the profession I am preparing to join.
